Molly with the Maskies

The only things that saved Molly from inconsolable grief were Ava’s calming presence, and the throbbing pain of her broken arm. Other than Hatch and the cats, Eldon and Ava had been her only friends. The former had rescued her from the oppression of Druinor and given her purpose, while the other had borne her up through weeks of misery in the Institute.

The Maskies were grief-stricken as well. They, too, had only known Eldon for a brief period of time, but he was the kind of man that inspired affection and camaraderie among all who knew him.

It was a bittersweet party that occupied the cabin that night. They gathered around the fire, all grateful to have snatched Molly from the grip of Marlowe, but grieving the loss of their brave comrade. But they were of the company of the faithful, as some of you may also be – they did not sorrow as those who have no hope, for they were certain to see him again.

Tobias bound Molly’s arm in a makeshift sling, and they talked and laughed about their memories of Eldon, his incorrigible impulsiveness and his kindness, his best traits and his worst, for they did not believe that it honors the dead to lie about them. Molly listened eagerly to the tale of Eldon’s escape from prison, of his furious concern for her and Hatch, and his restlessness as he waited for news of them. These insights into the soul of her beloved friend made her feel as if she was coming to know him better than she ever had before. The Maskies were just as eager to hear of her brief acquaintance with Eldon, and when Molly spoke of how he had spent twelve years watching over her while cut off from his homeland, Ava’s eyes filled with warm tears.

It was summarily decided that the best thing for Molly would be a good night’s sleep, and she was allowed a little wine to this end. The Maskies stayed up and talked with her until she fell into a fitful sleep by the fire, then crept into another room and fell to more serious discussion.

In the morning, they held a brief funeral for Eldon. Molly had woken in a cold sweat and her arm felt as though it was in a molten vice, but still she stayed devotedly at her friend’s side until he was gently laid to rest by Tobias and Nathaniel. They dug Eldon’s grave by hand, but they adorned it by magic, causing all manner of lovely wildflowers to spring up around it in vibrant hues of orange and purple and a bright, cheerful blue. Percival recited the Entreaty for Divine Mercy, and the entire company wept beside the newly grown flower bed. Molly stood holding Ava’s hand on one side and Tobias’ on the other. They each plucked a flower in their favorite color – Molly chose a vivid, fiery orange that faded to pink – and all those assembled put it in a breast pocket, except Molly, who put hers in her hair.
